Pansy
To some of us she was Mom; to others, a sister, Aunt Pansy, or Grandma. Before the older census pages, there was Pansy. She grew up near Batley Road in Anderson County, across from the cemetery that holds so much of our family’s history. This page is a beginning, with room for all of us to add the stories that sound like her.

Together at the graveside
At Freels Smith Cemetery, her five children gathered to spread her ashes at her sister’s gravesite. Her daughter-in-law and son-in-law joined them. Petals, flowers, and family marked a quiet return to a place that has held their story for generations.

Where the home place stood
Across the road from Freels Smith Cemetery is the place Sandy remembers as Pansy’s childhood home site. The house is gone, but the clearing and the road still help place this family’s memories on the land.
