Clarissa “Clara” Wical Boles
Clara’s name carries the family from Iowa into the Boles line. She appears as a child in Cyrus and Edna Wical’s 1860 household; a later Iowa birth return identifies her as Clara Boles and supplies her maiden name, Clara Wical.
The 1860 Pleasant Valley Township, Johnson County, Iowa household places young Clara with Cyrus and Edna. A later death record also names Cyrus Wical and Edna Higgins as her parents. Preserve source spellings such as Wikoff where they occur; Wical is the working display surname.
Strongly supportedClara and George Howard Boles appear with children, including James C. Boles, in the 1900 census. The 1881 Iowa birth return explicitly records “Clara Boles” and “Clara Wical.”

Clara was a child in Iowa when Cyrus enlisted in 1862. He rose from private to third sergeant in the 22nd Iowa Infantry and died during the Civil War when she was about eleven. The military and cemetery records disagree about his exact death date; his story keeps both entries visible.
